President Donald Trump is increasing efforts to combat drug trafficking groups, and one expert is praising the administration's tougher stance against what is considered a significant threat to the United States.
The long-standing fight against drug trafficking has evolved, shifting its focus from cocaine and marijuana to fentanyl. Retired Coast Guard pilot John Mixson explains that fentanyl fatalities, unlike a single terrorist attack, can accumulate into a mass casualty event. He describes fentanyl as "tiny little bombs," with potentially thousands of deaths occurring daily.
Last week, Trump shared a video of a U.S. military strike that sank a Venezuelan drug boat in the southern Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of 11 suspected traffickers. Mixson commended Trump's more aggressive approach, believing it could slow down drug trafficking and save lives. He views the ongoing battle against drug-trafficking groups as a continuous cycle of adaptation, where traffickers adjust their methods in response to law enforcement efforts.
Mixson notes that drug-trafficking groups often use high-speed boats to smuggle narcotics into the U.S., typically deploying multiple boats to increase their chances of success. He highlights the complex networks these groups operate and the high value of the drugs they transport. Crew members are often coerced into participating, with cartels using threats against their families.
The U.S. Coast Guard recently made a record-breaking drug bust in Florida, seizing over 76,000 pounds of narcotics. The Coast Guard stated that the amount seized was enough to potentially kill 23 million people, given that a lethal dose can be as little as 1.2 grams. The Customs and Border Protection website indicates that just two milligrams of fentanyl can cause an overdose.
The Trump administration is focused on preventing drug use, increasing access to treatment and recovery services, and stopping the flow of illicit drugs into the U.S.

Mixson's analogy of fentanyl as 'tiny little bombs' is powerful—let’s take action!

Focusing on fentanyl is essential, but criminalizing users instead of helping them is the wrong move.

Utilizing the military for policing isn't the answer; we need better social programs!

Trump's actions are just for show; real solutions require more than military strikes.
