Arkansas to Deploy National Guard for Deportation Assistance

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced plans to deploy dozens of National Guard members to assist in the deportation process for illegal immigrants. This initiative will involve collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security, utilizing federal Title 32 powers. This arrangement allows the guardsmen to remain under the governor's control while receiving federal funding.

Governor Sanders emphasized her commitment to removing violent, criminal illegal immigrants from Arkansas. She cited the Defense Against Criminal Illegals Act, which imposes stricter penalties on illegal immigrants who commit crimes within the state. She expressed her anticipation for the National Guard to work with the Trump Administration to enforce federal immigration laws.

The Governor praised former President Trump's efforts to secure the border and address crime in major cities, stating that Arkansas supports his initiatives. Brigadier General Chad Bridges of the Arkansas National Guard confirmed that service members are prepared to assist DHS, focusing on their core operations. Approximately 40 guardsmen will be activated for this mission, stationed in Fort Smith, Little Rock, and Fayetteville.

The National Guard's role will include logistical support and transportation of detained illegal immigrants, with the guardsmen remaining unarmed. They will also assist with the administrative aspects of the detainment and deportation process, allowing federal agents to concentrate on the direct capture of illegal immigrant criminals.

This announcement follows the signing of the Defense Against Criminal Illegals Act, which increases penalties for illegal immigrants who commit crimes in Arkansas. Furthermore, Governor Sanders has expanded the state's ban on sanctuary cities to encompass areas beyond municipal governance, including many rural communities.

The Governor's office also provided information on arrests of violent illegal immigrants in Arkansas. These included individuals accused of assaulting a state trooper and wanted for gang activity. Additionally, the office highlighted a case involving a fatal DUI crash allegedly caused by an illegal immigrant. During the current administration, Governor Sanders has been among a few governors who have visited the Mexican border to address the issue.

Relying on federal funding only exposes Arkansas to more federal control—this isn’t state sovereignty.

Strengthening the punitive measures against immigrants will only create more division and fear in our communities.

This new initiative only perpetuates fear and stigma against immigrants, harming Arkansas communities in the long run.

I worry about the safety of our communities when the National Guard is involved in deportation instead of traditional law enforcement.
