A young South African batsman has become the most expensive batter in SA20 history. He was signed by the Pretoria Capitals for R16.5 million during the SA20 season four auctions.
Previously, he played for the MI Cape Town franchise since the league's beginning in 2023. During his time there, he scored 676 runs in 32 matches, maintaining an average of 29.39 and a strike rate exceeding 145. He achieved four half-centuries, with a top score of 73. In the previous season, he had a standout performance, accumulating 291 runs in 10 matches with an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 184.17, including two half-centuries and a best score of 73.
The 22-year-old has already made his debut for South Africa in all formats. He has shown strong form in T20s this year, scoring 995 runs in 30 innings with an average of 43.26 and a strike rate over 186, including a century and six fifties. He also performed well for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, scoring 225 runs in six matches with an average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 180.00, including two half-centuries.
He recently scored 180 runs in three T20Is against Australia, finishing as the top run-scorer. This included a remarkable 125 off 56 balls, featuring 12 fours and eight sixes. This knock was the second-fastest T20I century for the Proteas and their highest individual score in T20Is. In his T20 career, he has scored 2,491 runs in 103 matches, averaging 29.30 with a strike rate of 154.81, including two centuries and 11 fifties, with a top score of 162.
Following his move to Pretoria, the team's head coach commented on his talent and potential. He highlighted the player's progress and ability to change the game, emphasizing his skill against spin bowling.
In other news, Aiden Markram, a two-time SA20 winning captain, has joined the Durban Super Giants. He was acquired for R 14 million.
Markram has scored 967 runs in 36 matches for his previous team, averaging 34.53 with a strike rate over 131, including a century and five fifties. He led his team to the finals in every tournament edition. This year, he also had a successful Indian Premier League season. In his T20 career, Markram has made 4,881 runs in 200 matches, averaging 30.69 with a strike rate of 133.03, including a century and 32 fifties.
The defending champions, MI Cape Town, will begin their title defense with a match against Durban's Super Giants.
