Trump Urges EU to Impose Tariffs on China and India, Promising US Support

Recently, President Donald Trump has encouraged the European Union to implement tariffs as high as 100% on imports from China and India. This suggestion aims to collectively increase economic pressure on Russia in the context of the ongoing Ukraine conflict. During a conference call involving senior U.S. and EU officials in Washington, discussions were held about strategies to elevate the economic implications for Russia. A U.S. official stated that they are fully ready to act, but will only proceed if their European allies participate.

In outlining his position, Trump emphasized the need for impactful tariffs that would remain in place until China ceases its oil purchases. Another official affirmed that Washington would align its actions with any tariffs Brussels decides to apply against both Beijing and New Delhi. Meanwhile, EU representatives have started to deliberate over potential secondary sanctions on China regarding its energy imports from Russia, though these discussions are still in the preliminary stages and hinge on U.S. collaboration.

India has resisted the push to lessen its dependence on Russian oil, following Trump's recent decision to increase tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, which he justified by referencing India's energy ties with Moscow. In reaction, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman labeled the tariffs as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable," asserting that India's oil strategy is primarily influenced by domestic demands.

Likewise, China has rejected external pressures concerning its energy purchases, affirming that its priority is to safeguard its energy supply in accordance with its national interests. Chinese authorities have expressed that trade wars yield no victors. Russia continues to be a significant oil supplier to both India and China since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. President Vladimir Putin has advised the West against adopting a "colonial tone" in communications with Beijing and New Delhi, warning that punitive measures aimed at these nations are intended to hinder their economic advancement. Putin remarked on the significance of engaging with major economies like India and China with respect, highlighting that they have substantial populations and economies guided by their own political frameworks.
