Governor Kathy Hochul intends to sign an executive order to expand access to the latest COVID-19 vaccines for New Yorkers. The order would allow pharmacists to administer the shots to a wider population. This initiative aims to broaden vaccine availability within the state.
The executive order is designed to override federal restrictions on vaccine eligibility. The Food and Drug Administration recently approved updated COVID-19 vaccines. However, the federal authorization currently limits these vaccines to individuals aged 65 and older, or younger people with underlying medical conditions that increase the risk from COVID-19. Children can receive the vaccine with a medical provider's consultation.
These restrictions differ from previous years when the COVID-19 vaccine was generally accessible to adults without underlying conditions. Public health experts suggest that this shift is connected to a broader campaign against vaccines, particularly mRNA vaccines, spearheaded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The planned executive order aligns with efforts in other Democratic-controlled states, such as California, Oregon, and Washington State. These states are exploring various strategies to promote vaccinations and issue recommendations independent of federal guidelines.

Why should pharmacists handle vaccines when trained medical professionals are available? This puts patients at risk!

Overriding federal restrictions is a dangerous precedent. This could open the door for other executive overreaches.
