The president of the Portuguese Order of the Engineers, Almeis Santos, surmised that the cable's sudden failure was atypical and questioned the efficacy of the manual and automatic braking systems in managing the heavy weight of the funicular. Carris, the company responsible for the Elevador da Gloria, insisted that routine inspections were conducted as per regulations.
