Michigan Man Sentenced for Manslaughter After Fatal Taco Bell Argument

Mark Newsome, a 55-year-old man from Michigan, has been sentenced to serve 5 to 15 years in prison for the manslaughter of his 72-year-old roommate, Dale Francis Mitchell. This sentence follows Newsome's plea of no contest to charges stemming from a violent altercation over an argument about Taco Bell. Initially faced with a second-degree murder charge, that accusation was dropped after he agreed to plead for manslaughter instead.

The tragic events took place in January at a boarding house where Newsome and Mitchell lived with other housemates. The conflict reportedly began when Mitchell was accused of stealing a taco from another resident, waking up Newsome from his sleep, who then intervened in the heated dispute. In the ensuing confrontation, Newsome struck Mitchell multiple times, leading to serious injuries from which Mitchell ultimately succumbed.

Roommates present at the scene expressed their shock at the incident, with one stating that the violence was unimaginable and left the house covered in blood. During his sentencing, Newsome claimed that he felt threatened by Mitchell, citing a prior altercation days before. However, this defense was met with disapproval by the presiding judge, who criticized the rationale behind the lethal escalation of the conflict over a meal.

In a victim impact statement presented in court by Mitchell’s family, the profound emotional toll of his death was articulated, reflecting on the painful memories overshadowing their time spent with him.
