In Ainan, a town in Ehime Prefecture, local authorities are reaching out to the community for contributions to finance a new exhibition space for a rare Shiden-Kai fighter jet. This historic aircraft, associated with the Imperial Japanese Navy and believed to be the only one of its type left in Japan, has been publicly displayed since 1980 and was recently listed as an Important Aviation Heritage item.
The Shiden-Kai, known for its advanced engineering during the latter part of World War II, was built to replace the Zero fighter. Approximately 400 units were produced post-1941, and it was recognized for its capabilities, including a powerful Homare engine and combat flaps designed for agility during flight.
Originally operated by the 343rd Naval Air Group, the jet crash-landed in Hisayoshi Bay during combat in July 1945 and was salvaged in 1979 after being located by a local diver. The exhibition space that currently houses it, situated atop Mount Baseyama, is now 45 years old and in need of replacement, prompting the initiation of the crowdfunding venture set to run until early September.
The funding goal is set at 57 million yen, with donations aiding in both relocating the aircraft and designing a new educational facility. Additionally, those who contribute may receive unique gifts, although residents of the prefecture are excluded from these, yet they will have access to events related to the project. Governor Tokihiro Nakamura emphasized the importance of the crowdfunding initiative not just for financial support, but as a means to foster reflections on peace amidst ongoing global conflicts.

Isn't asking for donations for a fighter jet exhibition a bit tone-deaf considering the current global conflicts?

What a wonderful way to promote peace and reflection through education! Count me in as a donor.

That money could go towards education or healthcare. Why prioritize an old plane?
