On Wednesday evening, a tragic accident involving a funicular in Lisbon resulted in a significant loss of life and numerous injuries. The Portuguese health ministry reported that at least fifteen people were killed, and eighteen others were injured, with five of the injured in critical condition.
The incident occurred on the Elevador da Glória, a popular funicular that ascends a steep hill. This funicular connects Restauradores Square and the Avenida da Liberdade with the Bairro Alto neighborhood, known for its panoramic views. According to the Lisbon Firefighters Regiment, the accident, which happened shortly after 6 p.m., was caused by a detached cable within the funicular's structure. This resulted in the funicular losing control and crashing into a building.
Tiago Augusto, the head of the health ministry, issued a statement on Wednesday. He indicated that the victims included individuals with both Portuguese and foreign surnames, although the specific nationalities of the deceased were still being determined. He also confirmed that there were no children among the fatalities.

How many more people must suffer from preventable accidents like this before changes are made? Enough is enough!

Provoking fear in tourists isn’t how you build a city’s reputation. The government should take more responsibility for accidents!
