Protests Erupt in Indonesia Over Police Violence and Human Rights Concerns

On September 3, 2025, demonstrators from the Alliance of Indonesian Women gathered outside the House of Representatives in Jakarta. During this rally, they voiced their demands for police reform, holding signs with messages such as "reform the police" and "your sweet promises cause diabetes." The protest also featured brooms, which the Alliance used to symbolize the necessity of "sweeping away the state's dirt" and the oppressive actions of security forces.

The protests have significantly impacted Indonesia, the world's third-largest democracy, following the tragic death of a motorcycle taxi driver caused by a police vehicle. As the demonstrations expanded across the country, reports indicate that at least ten individuals have died, with instances of looting and rioting occurring as well. The Alliance, which is composed of various women-led civil society groups, decided to cancel a planned protest due to fears of violent reprisals from authorities.

Rizky Ananda, a 30-year-old participant, expressed the group's intent to demonstrate the predominantly peaceful nature of the protests and emphasized the issues of violence against individuals, particularly women, alongside government fiscal irresponsibility. The Indonesian government has taken a firm stance against the protests, with President Prabowo Subianto asserting that the military and police would maintain order, likening some of the unrest to acts of terrorism and treason. Despite the situation, Prabowo opted to attend a military parade in China, citing a return to normalcy in Indonesia.

In light of the protests, the National Commission on Human Rights has initiated an investigation into how security forces have responded to the demonstrations. Additionally, the United Nations' human rights office has urged for thorough inquiries into any violations of international human rights laws related to the use of force during these events.
