Kim Jong Un Vows Support to Putin Amid Historic Meeting with Xi Jinping

In a notable display of solidarity, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised to provide comprehensive support to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting on Wednesday in Beijing. This gathering occurred amidst celebrations recognizing the anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II. Earlier in the day, both leaders joined Chinese President Xi Jinping at a large military parade, which marked the first time in decades that the three nations' heads came together in such a setting.

Following the parade, Kim and Putin shared a car ride to a state guesthouse where they engaged in private discussions. Kim expressed his readiness to assist Russia, stating, "If there is anything I can or must do for you and the Russian people, I consider it my duty as a fraternal obligation." Putin reciprocated by referring to Kim as "Dear Chairman of State Affairs" and wishing him well. The discussions underscored the burgeoning relationship between the two nations, particularly in light of their mutual defense treaty signed for 2024 amidst heavy international sanctions targeting both countries.

Putin commended the North Korean troops who have recently assisted in repelling Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region, noting their bravery and contribution to the effort. He expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by the North Korean military and their families. This Beijing visit was significant for Kim, as it was not only his first trip to China since the onset of the pandemic but also a chance to meet both Putin and Xi together, along with numerous other global leaders.

Experts, such as Park Won-gon from Ewha Womans University, view this visit as a significant propaganda achievement for Kim. Standing and walking alongside Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, he significantly bolstered his image, presenting a powerful front to both the international community and his domestic audience.
