Miami Hurricanes Achieve Major Victory Over Notre Dame, Eye Upcoming Match Against Bethune-Cookman

The Miami Hurricanes celebrated one of their most significant victories in the Mario Cristobal era on Sunday, emerging victorious over last year's national runner-up, Notre Dame. This win has propelled the Hurricanes into the top five of the AP Top 25 poll, where they currently hold the No. 5 spot ahead of their upcoming game against FCS opponent Bethune-Cookman, who has lost their previous encounter.

Bethune-Cookman comes into this matchup on the heels of a heavy 42-9 defeat to FIU, which extends their winless record against Miami to 0-7. The Hurricanes have consistently dominated these home games, winning by an impressive average of 41.9 points. Their last game against the Wildcats ended in a decisive 48-7 victory in 2023.

The game against Bethune-Cookman not only serves as a chance for Miami to build on their early-season success, but it also presents an opportunity for the coaching staff to assess the team further and potentially rest key players if they manage to establish a comfortable lead. This contest marks Miami’s second in a four-game home stretch to start the season.

Miami’s recent performance, particularly their narrow 27-24 victory against Notre Dame, showcased several promising developments. The team came close to squandering a 14-point lead in the second half but managed to clinch the win with a 47-yard field goal from Carter Davis in the final moments of the fourth quarter. The defense was particularly noteworthy, as it restricted Notre Dame to just seven points during the first three quarters and generated three sacks while winning the turnover battle by forcing two turnovers without any of their own.

The emergence of new starters has been pivotal, especially true-freshman receiver Malachi Toney, who scored Miami's first touchdown on a 28-yard pass from new starting quarterback Carson Beck. Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson praised Toney's constant effort and composure, emphasizing his reliable performance in practice.

On the other hand, the Wildcats, who are facing their second FBS opponent this season, struggled to find any bright spots in their recent opener, aside from a few successful field goals. Coach Raymond Woodie Jr. highlighted the need for his team to improve their game finish, especially after suffering multiple close losses last season. Unfortunately, their latest game against FIU saw them trailing significantly by halftime.

Both quarterbacks for Bethune-Cookman, Cam'Ron Ransom and Timmy McClain, had time on the field during the game against FIU, with McClain taking the majority of the snaps and completing 18 out of 28 passes for 164 yards. The Wildcats will need to regroup and focus on improving their performance if they hope to turn their season around against a formidable Miami team.

A dominant game against a previously defeated team doesn’t prove much. Miami's real challenges are yet to come.

Malachi Toney might've shined, but one player doesn't make a strong team. They need more than just individual performances.

The true test will be how they respond in tough games. This victory feels like a sugar high.

A win against Notre Dame doesn't mean much when you almost blew a 14-point lead. Miami needs to work on finishing strong.
