China has reportedly deployed oil rigs and related infrastructure within Taiwan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) near Dongsha Island, raising concerns about their potential military applications. This information comes from a recent report.
The report indicates that Beijing has established a network of drilling rigs, storage ships, and oil platforms, all operated by the state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation. These facilities have been in place since at least May 2020.
The situation has intensified recently. In July 2024, an oil rig came dangerously close to Dongsha's restricted waters. Another platform has entered deep into Taiwan's EEZ, positioned relatively close to the island's restricted zone.
Despite being classified as civilian equipment, these platforms are seen as part of China's broader strategy to assert territorial claims without direct military action. Analysts have expressed concerns that the rigs could be adapted for military purposes, potentially housing radar systems, defensive weaponry, or even attack helicopters.
China has previously attempted similar deployments in the EEZs of other nations. However, those governments successfully protested and forced the removal of the platforms. The report suggests that Taiwan should adopt a similar strategy of diplomatic and public opposition.
The report emphasizes that consistent opposition could help mitigate China's incremental advances. Meanwhile, Taiwan is actively strengthening its defenses around Dongsha Island. The Coast Guard Administration has intercepted Chinese vessels near the island, and stationed marines are equipped with various defensive weapons.

Taiwan should focus on diplomacy instead of escalating tensions. This approach will only create more conflict.

Overreacting to China’s actions undermines Taiwan’s credibility on the global stage.

We must acknowledge the threat that these facilities pose. This is not just about oil; it’s about our safety.

Consistent diplomatic opposition is key. Taiwan must not let China operate unchecked in its waters.

Before jumping to conclusions, let’s consider that these platforms are for oil exploration, nothing more.
