Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, held a meeting with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Tianjin, a city in northern China. The meeting took place on Saturday.
Secretary-General Guterres was in Tianjin to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025. During the meeting, Wang Yi emphasized the importance of strengthening the UN's role in a world experiencing significant transformations and facing critical choices.
Wang Yi stated that the most fitting way to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the UN's founding is to uphold an accurate understanding of World War II history, adhere to multilateralism, and support the UN's central role in global affairs. He added that China supports the UN in reforming the global governance system to create a future of peace, security, prosperity, and progress for the world.
Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged the challenges facing the international community, including the detrimental effects of unilateralism and power politics on the UN and the multilateral system. He also highlighted the growing importance of countries in the Global South, with China as a key example, in advancing global peace and development. Guterres commended China's commitment to multilateralism and its strong support for the UN.

China’s version of global governance means more control, not collaboration. This isn’t a good path.

Wang Yi talks about multilateralism but doesn’t mention China's aggressive territorial claims. Hypocrisy at its finest.

China reforming global governance? More like trying to dominate it. We can't let that happen.
