The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has imposed a penalty of Rs 102.55 crore on Kannada actress Ranya concerning an alleged gold smuggling case. Officials have indicated that her assets could be seized if the fine remains unpaid.
Ranya was apprehended on March 3 at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport. Authorities discovered her in possession of 14.8 kg of gold upon her arrival from Dubai.
The DRI's investigation uncovered that she had made four trips to Dubai within a span of approximately fifteen days, during which gold was smuggled. The agency has issued a warning that failure to pay the penalty could lead to the seizure of her property.
In a separate development, Ranya Rao's stepfather, Ramchandra Rao, was reinstated as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement on August 11. He had previously been placed on compulsory leave following his arrest.
A government notification from the Karnataka Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms confirmed the withdrawal of the compulsory leave order for Dr. K Ramachandra Rao, IPS. He was immediately reposted as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, in an upgraded vacant position. The position's status and responsibilities were declared equivalent to the cadre post of Director General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Special Units & Economic offences, Bengaluru, under the relevant IPS rules.

If her stepfather was reinstated, perhaps it’s a sign that there’s more to this story than we know.

Being a celebrity doesn’t exempt you from the law. I hope they seize her assets as they threatened!

It's outrageous how celebrities think they can get away with illegal activities! Ranya should face the full consequences of her actions.

I believe she didn’t intend to cause harm. People should have compassion and recognize her hard work.

Penalties should be corrective, not just punitive. Let’s hope she learns from this and moves forward.
