Gabby Thomas, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, has decided to withdraw from the upcoming track world championships set to take place in Tokyo later this month. This decision comes as she continues her recovery from an Achilles tendon injury, which she initially suffered in May and further aggravated in July.
Despite managing to compete in the Toyota USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in early August, where she secured a third-place finish in the 200 meters, Thomas feels it is necessary to give her body time to heal properly. In a statement, she expressed her understanding that some fans may be disappointed by her choice, but emphasized the importance of taking care of herself and acknowledging one's own limitations in the face of injury. She highlighted that being an athlete often involves pushing oneself, yet sometimes prioritizing health is the wisest decision for the long-term.
At 28 years old, Thomas's impressive achievements include winning the 200-meter sprint and both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays during the 2024 Paris Olympics. The world championships in Tokyo are scheduled to unfold from September 13 to 21, and she wished her Team USA teammates luck in their endeavors for medals.

Injuries happen in sports; it's part of the game. Disappointing to see you step back now.

Smart decision! It’s better to take time to heal than risk long-term injury.
