Florida State stunned the college football world with a remarkable Week 1 performance. Following a dismal 2-10 season, the Seminoles delivered a resounding statement, securing a decisive 31-17 victory over the then-No. 8 ranked Alabama. This upset earned them significant recognition in the Associated Press poll, propelling them from outside the Top 25 to a No. 14 ranking.
The team now aims to maintain this momentum as they face FCS opponent East Texas A&M in Week 2. The Lions are coming off a 42-13 loss to then-No. 16 SMU, marking their second consecutive game against an ACC opponent. Florida State, despite being a two-touchdown underdog at home, won by a comfortable margin. Coach Mike Norvell expressed a desire for even greater improvement, highlighting areas where the team could further elevate its performance.
The Seminoles' offensive transformation was evident, particularly in their rushing attack. Under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and quarterback Tommy Castellanos, they amassed 230 rushing yards against an Alabama defense filled with future NFL talent. This was a stark contrast to their struggles in 2024, when they ranked near the bottom of the FBS in rushing yards per game. Castellanos led the team with 78 rushing yards and contributed a rushing touchdown, while also leading a dynamic passing game, completing 9 of 14 passes for 152 yards.
Defensively, new coordinator Tony White made an immediate impact. After struggling in 2024, the Seminoles' defense limited Alabama to just 87 rushing yards and 17 points. Alabama managed only 10 points and three turnovers on downs in five trips across midfield after their opening touchdown.
East Texas A&M, in its fourth season at the FCS level, is experiencing its first season playing Power 4 opponents. Coach Clint Dolezel acknowledged the challenge ahead, recognizing Florida State's impressive victory over Alabama. Against SMU, East Texas A&M showed flashes of competitiveness, but struggled in the red zone, managing only one touchdown in six attempts. Quarterbacks Will Madonna and Eric Rodriguez each threw interceptions that were returned for touchdowns in the loss.

Sure, they beat Alabama, but they need to show consistency before we praise them.

I don't see Florida State making it past mid-season without collapsing again.

Beating Alabama is impressive, but can Florida State keep it up? I'm not convinced.
