Congress Rajya Sabha MP P. Chidambaram has voiced strong criticism of the Tianjin Declaration issued by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), labeling it as "inane." His comments were made in response to the declaration, which was signed by member states, including Pakistan.
Chidambaram's criticism centers on the inclusion of Pakistan, a nation he views as a "terrorism-exporting" country. He argued that Pakistan's participation in the declaration undermines its credibility, as it suggests a lack of distinction between nations that support terrorism and those that are victims of it.
The Tianjin Declaration itself condemned terrorism in all its forms. The SCO member states also expressed their condolences for the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people. They emphasized the need to bring the perpetrators, organizers, and sponsors of such attacks to justice.
Furthermore, the member states reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism, separatism, and extremism. They also highlighted the importance of sovereign states taking the lead in countering these threats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by member states following the Pahalgam attack and called for a unified approach to fighting terrorism, free from double standards.

This is a diplomatic move. It's better to be in the room talking than out of it.

It's important to look beyond immediate problems and focus on long-term global stability.

Chidambaram is nitpicking. He's taking a tactical advantage, which makes the message look less credible.

He's right. The presence of Pakistan makes the declaration a joke. It's not a unified front if Pakistan is taking part.

We should not compromise on our principles. Pakistan should be held accountable for its actions.
