A Caribbean Capital's Volcanic Demise and Its Haunting Legacy

it is a city without any inhabitants. This unusual status stems from a devastating volcanic eruption that forced the evacuation of its residents three decades ago.

Before the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano on July 18, 1995, Plymouth was a thriving city with a population of approximately 4,000. The eruption, however, transformed the southern part of Montserrat into a landscape reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The city's fate has drawn comparisons to Pompeii. The eruption resulted in two-thirds of the island being declared an exclusion zone.

The initial evacuation of residents occurred in August 1995, with a brief return period before renewed volcanic activity in December led to a second evacuation. Further eruptions in 1996 and 1997 solidified the government's restrictions on accessing Plymouth. The majority of the island's inhabitants were forced to leave, with many relocating to the UK or neighboring Caribbean territories.

Footage from the restricted area reveals a haunting scene of a deserted city. Abandoned structures, including a restaurant, a library, and hotels, stand as silent witnesses to the past. The ruins of the Flora Fountain Hotel, a corporate office building, a police station, government headquarters, a bank, a general store, and several churches are among the remnants.

Since 1998, Brades has served as Montserrat's unofficial capital, while a new capital is under development at Little Bay. Today, guided tours are permitted to visit Plymouth, with government-authorized guides accompanying visitors within the exclusion zone. As the island's then-premier stated, Montserrat has adapted to life with the volcano.

Leaving everything behind is a tragedy. How much of their lives were wiped out?

Three decades and still uninhabitable? That's a crushing reality for the former residents. 😔

I find this so fascinating! A real-life Pompeii, but with a modern twist. I'd love to visit.

I find the concept of a modern Pompeii extremely eye-catching. I would love to see it firsthand!
