The UK is transitioning into meteorological autumn, with cooler temperatures and drizzle replacing the hot summer weather. Despite the recent unpredictable mix of sunny spells and storms, the summer saw four official heatwaves, potentially making it a record-breaking season. Early September is predicted to bring scattered rainfall and thunderstorms, with temperatures in the high teens. However, there are whispers of an "Indian Summer," a period of hot weather in early autumn.
Weather maps have indicated a potential rise in temperatures to 30C this month, particularly in southern England starting from Monday, September 8. Despite these indications, the Met Office advises against prematurely reaching for sunscreen and beach gear. They suggest the forecast for the month is more likely to involve moderate conditions, staying below heatwave thresholds.
Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell stated that current predictions for September's weather do not resemble the conditions experienced during the summer. He explained that the general trend for the UK, especially into the second week of September, is changeable and unsettled weather. While there will be drier and brighter periods, it will still feel fairly warm during any sunny moments. Although an early autumn heatwave isn't impossible, the current pattern of warm but unsettled weather is expected to persist throughout the month.
The Met Office forecasts that temperatures during the first week of September will likely remain around average, between 13C and 21C. Heavy rain could disrupt travel in some parts of the UK, particularly Scotland and northern regions, with the unsettled weather spreading eastward on Tuesday. The forecaster previously stated that this summer has "almost certainly" been the UK's warmest on record, with an average of 16.13C, based on data up to August 28. This would surpass the previous record of 15.76C set in 2018, and would mean that all five of the warmest summers since 1884 have occurred since the year 2000.

While I love the summer sun, I'm excited for autumn too! Beautiful colors and crisp air.

Feels like the Met Office is hedging their bets. 'Maybe a heatwave... maybe not...' Make up your minds!

I like that the meteorologist uses a mix of facts and predictions. Very helpful!

Heatwaves? Record-breaking summer? Felt more like consistent grey skies and sporadic showers.
