On Sunday night, a fire broke out on Southport Pier, the oldest iron pier in Britain. The blaze began in a hut on the pier shortly before midnight and spread approximately 20 meters before firefighters arrived. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service reported that crews were alerted at 11:48 pm and on the scene by 11:54 pm, with three fire engines in attendance. The fire affected an area on and below the pier, including a cafe building. Firefighters used hoses to extinguish the main body of the fire by around 12:50 am, and the fire was completely extinguished by 1:34 am. The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault.
This incident occurred just two months after the government confirmed its intention to support the reopening of Southport Pier. The pier had been temporarily closed in 2022 for essential maintenance following advice from structural engineers due to severe weather. The closure had a significant impact on the town's leisure and tourism sector. In July, the Sefton Council leader confirmed that restoration work could begin within six to eight weeks of securing government funding, with an estimated completion time of 12 to 14 months.
Southport Pier, stretching 3,600 ft, is the second-longest pier in Britain. It once hosted famous performers, including Charlie Chaplin. The pier faced potential demolition in 1990 but was saved by a single vote. The 2022 closure marks the second time the structure has been closed due to safety concerns, with a previous closure in the 1990s leading to a £7.2 million restoration. The recent closure has generated frustration among locals and tourists.
Visitors expressed their disappointment on platforms like TripAdvisor, citing concerns about the decline of Southport and the state of the pier. Some compared the town unfavorably to Blackpool, highlighting the lack of amenities and the general state of disrepair.

At least the fire was contained quickly. It shows that the fire department is responsive and ready to protect our landmarks.

Why do we keep letting these historic sites decay? We need real action, not just talk about restoration!
