As the football season recommences, fans will flock to pubs to watch matches, but the cost of this experience varies significantly depending on location. A recent study examined the affordability of match days across the UK, considering factors like drink prices, food costs, and travel expenses. The research aimed to identify the most budget-friendly cities for enjoying a football game in a pub.
travel cost (30%), beer price (30%), food price (25%), and sports pub availability (15%). These weighted scores were then combined to produce an overall ranking.
Salford emerged as the most affordable city for watching football, with a total score of 72.68. Despite ranking lower in terms of sports pub availability and travel costs, Salford excelled with its low pint prices and affordable food options. Preston secured the second position with a score of 71.24, demonstrating Lancashire's value for football fans. The city offered some of the cheapest travel costs, along with affordable meals and drinks, and a high number of sports pubs per resident. Lancaster claimed third place with a score of 70.15, offering the cheapest beer in the country and the lowest food costs. While it had fewer sports pubs and higher travel costs, Lancaster proved to be a wallet-friendly destination once you arrived. Ely and Lichfield rounded out the top five.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Lisburn, London, Cambridge, and Oxford received low scores due to high food, drink, and travel expenses. Surprisingly, some of the UK's major football hubs, such as Birmingham, Newcastle, Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, and Edinburgh, achieved only average results in the rankings.

I’d rather pay a bit more for a quality atmosphere than save a few pounds in a mediocre pub.
