Jeremy Smith, the Country Manager for the British Red Cross in Afghanistan, reported that the earthquake struck a challenging and remote mountainous area, severely hindering rescue attempts. The situation is exacerbated by continuous aftershocks and recent flooding and landslides that have obstructed rescue operations. Many have lost their homes and will face prolonged displacement during the winter months, prompting the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to provide essential aid for as long as it is needed.
Sadiqullah, a resident of Nurgal's Maza Dara area, recounted a harrowing experience of entrapment under rubble for several hours, resulting in the tragic loss of his wife and two sons, while he and his injured father await medical assistance. The urgency of the situation was echoed by Samira Sayed Rahman, Advocacy Director at Save the Children Afghanistan, who called for immediate international aid. She emphasized the unexpected timing of the earthquake, which struck while families were sleeping in homes incapable of withstanding such tremors, and the continuing aftershocks instilling fear among children.
Another local, Azam, a doctor from Kunar province, described experiencing the quake's severe intensity, which damaged their home. Fortunately, his children were not present; otherwise, their survival could have been jeopardized. He lamented the profound loss of their possessions in the rubble while the tremors gave no signs of letting up.
Salam Al Janabi from UNICEF reported that access to heavily impacted zones remains obstructed, with potentially hundreds of homes destroyed in the disastrous aftermath. The sheer mountainous nature of the area has caused buildings to topple upon one another, intensifying the devastation. A local villager urgently appealed for assistance, revealing that both children and the elderly are trapped beneath the debris, and called for help in recovering those buried.

When will the world learn? Building codes should be enforced in these earthquake-prone regions to prevent these tragedies.

Another earthquake, another plea for help. It's frustrating to see the same patterns repeat without real solutions being implemented.
