China's hopes in the 2025 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship were dashed on Sunday following a 3-1 defeat to France in the round of 16. The match scores were 25-20, 27-25, 22-25, and 25-20.
The opening set saw China struggling with offensive errors, quickly falling behind. Despite head coach Zhao Yong's attempts to adjust the lineup with substitutions, the team couldn't overcome the deficit, losing the set 25-20.
The second set saw China mount a comeback, earning set points. However, France responded with strong blocking, ultimately winning the set 27-25. Chinese captain Gong Xiangyu acknowledged the challenges, noting France's effective blocking and serving.
China managed to stay in the match by winning the third set 25-22, fueled by a service run from young setter Zhang Zixuan.
However, France, led by captain Helena Cazaute's impressive performance, dominated the fourth set. With the score tied, Cazaute's serving gave France the edge, leading to a 25-20 set victory and securing the match win. Cazaute expressed pride in her team's performance.
The victory propelled France into the quarterfinals for the first time in the World Championship. For China, the early exit represented a setback from their 2022 performance, where they reached the quarterfinals. Gong Xiangyu reflected on the loss, acknowledging the team's effort and highlighting areas for future improvement.

Zhao Yong will learn from this. Let's give the coach time.

Where was the offense? Too many errors cost them the match.
