The chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Doron Almog, a retired Israeli general, canceled a planned visit to South Africa. The decision was announced by the organization on Sunday, citing concerns about a potential arrest warrant. Almog had intended to meet with the Jewish community in South Africa. The trip was called off following an assessment of the situation.
The Jewish Agency for Israel, a quasi-governmental organization, serves as a vital link between Israel and Jewish communities worldwide. Officials explained that the decision was made out of caution, due to the possibility of anti-Israel activists seeking Almog's arrest. South Africa is currently leading a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, accusing Jerusalem of genocide in Gaza. The South African government has also become a vocal critic of Israel since the war with Hamas began on October 7, 2023.
Almog's family has been directly impacted by the conflict. Several of his relatives were killed in the Hamas-led attack, and his daughter-in-law and her three children were abducted into Gaza, later released in a hostage deal. The agency fears that South African authorities might pursue charges against Almog because of his past role as an army officer during his 34-year military career.
This is not the first time Almog has faced such a situation. In 2005, pro-Palestinian activists in Britain succeeded in having an arrest warrant issued against him over alleged war crimes, forcing him to return to Israel without disembarking the plane. In 2009, Spain's National Court briefly investigated Almog and other Israeli officials, but the case was dropped.
Despite this setback, the Jewish Agency emphasized that its global work continues. The organization stated that it works to strengthen the connection between Jewish communities and Israel. Agency envoys operate in numerous countries, and the organization's leaders regularly meet with community leaders. The agency's activities are ongoing and will continue to strengthen these communities and Israel.
South Africa's petition to the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide and war crimes, is ongoing. The attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on October 7 resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the taking of 252 hostages. Of the remaining hostages, around 20 are believed to be alive.

It’s sad that anti-Israel activists are able to shut down these meetings.

Avoiding justice is a bad look.

Is this a sign of guilt? Can’t face scrutiny of any actions?
