Shi Yuqi's Semifinal Berth, Lai's Historic Run, and China's Dominance Continue

Chinese badminton player Shi Yuqi, the top seed, secured a spot in the men's singles semifinals of the Badminton World Championships. He achieved this by defeating his compatriot, Weng Hongyang, in a hard-fought three-game match. This marks Shi's first time reaching the semifinals in seven years. His next opponent will be Victor Lai, a rising star from Canada.

Victor Lai, a surprise contender, advanced to the semifinals after an impressive performance in the quarterfinals. He upset Loh Kean Yew, the 2021 world champion from Singapore. Lai, at just 20 years old, displayed exceptional speed, accuracy, and strategic play, ultimately securing a victory in two games. This win also makes him the first Canadian to ever medal at the World Championships.

The results from Friday also guaranteed that China would secure medals in all five disciplines of the tournament. The women's doubles saw an all-Chinese match, with Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning triumphing over their teammates, Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian, after a comeback. They will now compete against Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi from Japan in the semifinals.

In the women's singles, Chen Yufei, the fourth seed, defeated Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in straight games. Chen will now face An Se-young of South Korea, the top seed, in the semifinals. Chen expressed her determination to compete at her best and leave no regrets in the upcoming match.

In the men's doubles, the Chinese debutants Chen Boyang and Liu Yi kept China's title hopes alive with a decisive victory over Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan from Chinese Taipei. They are set to face Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty from India in their next match.

The mixed doubles also saw both seeded Chinese pairs advance, ensuring an all-Chinese final. Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin, the second seeds, and Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui, the seventh seeds, each won their quarterfinal matches in straight games, setting up a semifinal clash between them.

Victor Lai's win was a fluke. He won't fare well against Shi Yuqi.

Chen Yufei may be the fourth seed, but I don’t see her beating An Se-young.
