A powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan early on Monday. The tremor, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, was felt across the region, including parts of Pakistan.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 00:47:41 IST. The epicenter was located at latitude 34.50°N and longitude 70.81°E, at a depth of 160 km.
Following the initial earthquake, several aftershocks were recorded. These aftershocks ranged in magnitude between 4 and 5.
One aftershock, measuring 4.7 in magnitude, occurred at a depth of approximately 140 km, near the initial epicenter. Subsequent aftershocks included a 4.3 magnitude tremor and a 5.0 magnitude tremor, at depths of 140 km and 40 km, respectively.
The tremors are classified as either shallow or intermediate earthquakes, based on their depth. Shallow and intermediate earthquakes are often more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes travel a shorter distance to the surface, potentially causing stronger ground shaking and more damage.
Afghanistan is situated in a geologically active area, with the Hindu Kush Mountain range experiencing earthquakes annually. The country lies on fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
