Over the weekend, members of the Futuro Vegetal activist group targeted the iconic Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona by smearing it with red and black paint. This action was aimed at highlighting their discontent with the Spanish government’s perceived inaction regarding the recent summer forest fires that have devastated various regions of Spain. A video shared on social media shows police arresting two activists who were vocally demanding "climate justice" during the demonstration.
The group’s announcement stated that approximately 70% of wildfires in Spain are linked to livestock farming, a claim they attributed to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, although this statistic has not been independently verified by CBS News. The ongoing wildfires have resulted in the loss of four lives and impacted around 870,000 acres of land in just a fortnight, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). Since the start of 2025, more than 280 fires have burned nearly a million acres across Spain, marking a significant increase compared to the previous decade.
In response to the catastrophe, the Spanish government has described the wildfires as one of the most severe environmental disasters in recent times and acknowledged the connection to climate change. The summer's major heat wave has fueled intense wildfires not only in Spain but also in Greece, France, Portugal, and Turkey. Recently, the situation has improved with officials stating that the emergency status is now "coming to an end."
Futuro Vegetal is known for its controversial demonstration tactics, having previously staged protests that included gluing themselves to artworks and defacing luxury property. In the past year, Spanish police arrested several group members involved in similar protests, aiming to draw public attention to the urgent climate crisis. Their actions reflect a growing trend in climate activism across Europe, where various groups have employed radical methods to advocate for environmental protection.

Activism sometimes requires bold actions. These wildfires are a cry for help that can’t be ignored.

They say they’re advocating for the environment, but all they did was ruin a beautiful landmark. What a shame.
