Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared that Ukraine will respond to recent drone attacks by Russia, which struck power facilities and left around 60,000 customers in northern and southern Ukraine without electricity. This marked an escalation in the ongoing conflict, with both Russian and Ukrainian forces intensifying their air operations over the past weeks, now well into the third year of the war.
The attacks reportedly included strikes by Russian drones on energy facilities in the Odesa region, particularly devastating the port city of Chornomorsk. Local officials noted that residential buildings suffered damage, and emergency responses were complicated by ongoing military operations. The DTEK energy company indicated that repairs would commence once it received clearance from the military. Additionally, damages were reported in Ukraine's northern Chernihiv region, affecting thousands of households there as well.
The scale of the assault has drawn significant attention, with reports indicating that Russia launched 142 drones in a single night, of which Ukrainian air defense managed to intercept 126. Nevertheless, ten locations sustained damage. As international discussions progress, US President Donald Trump is attempting to mediate an end to the conflict that began with Russia's invasion in February 2022. Meanwhile, European leaders are preparing plans for a potential multinational troop deployment to Ukraine, with American support emphasized by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The ongoing violence threatens to undermine peace efforts, as illustrated by statements from US envoys and calls for a ceasefire from Pope Leo. Recent escalations by Russia have resulted in the loss of civilian lives and significant infrastructure damage. European leaders are expected to convene in Paris soon to discuss further actions regarding Ukraine's security and support.
