Ben Shelton's U.S. Open run concluded in a heartbreaking fashion as he retired mid-match due to a shoulder injury, describing the pain as the most severe he had ever experienced. The match was against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino on Louis Armstrong Stadium. Shelton, the sixth seed, was in a competitive contest when the injury occurred.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, despite battling physical issues of his own, managed to advance to the fourth round. The Serbian player, recovering from a lower back problem, defeated Cameron Norrie. This victory not only eliminated the last British player in the men's draw but also made Djokovic the oldest man to reach the last 16 at Flushing Meadows since 1991.
In other matches, Frances Tiafoe, the 17th seed, was defeated by Jan-Lennard Struff. Emma Navarro, the 10th seed, also suffered an upset loss to Barbora Krejcikova.
Djokovic's victory also marked a milestone, surpassing Roger Federer to become the player with the most hardcourt victories at the majors. He is now closer to achieving a record 25th Grand Slam title.
In the women's draw, Emma Raducanu was defeated by Elena Rybakina. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz overcame a knee concern to win his match against Luciano Darderi. Aryna Sabalenka, the defending women's champion, defeated Leylah Fernandez.
Jessica Pegula and Marketa Vondrousova also secured their spots in the fourth round. Taylor Townsend, an unseeded American, caused a major upset by defeating fifth seed Mirra Andreeva.
Despite his disappointment, Shelton remained positive when speaking to the media. He expressed gratitude for his blessings and accomplishments in the sport.
Taylor Fritz provided a bright spot for American fans, winning his match against Jerome Kym. He is now the only remaining American man in the last 16. Tommy Paul is set to play Alexander Bublik.

Injuries are part of sports; it’s better to be safe than risk long-term damage.

I was rooting for Shelton, but retiring mid-match just shows he’s not ready for the big leagues.
