A devastating cloudburst and subsequent landslide struck the Himalayan region of Jammu in northern India on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least eleven individuals. The incident in the Ramban district's Rajgarh tehsil, triggered by the cloudburst, claimed the lives of four villagers, with several others reported missing.
In a separate incident in the remote Badder village of Reasi district, a landslide caused by heavy rainfall buried a house, leading to the deaths of seven people. Tragically, the deceased included a couple and their five children, all under the age of twelve.
The ongoing monsoon season in the Indian Himalayas has been particularly severe, claiming the lives of at least 115 people since August 14th. The intense rainfall has also prompted authorities to open major dams, leading to flood alerts for three rivers in neighboring Pakistan. Thousands of people have been displaced, and significant damage has been inflicted upon residential and commercial properties due to the heavy rains, cloudbursts, and landslides.
Flash floods, a consequence of the recent deluge, caused the destruction of two houses and a school building in Ramban. Authorities are actively searching for five individuals who remain unaccounted for, and the flash floods have caused further property damage in the area.
The critical highway connecting Jammu to Kashmir has been closed for the fifth consecutive day due to damage caused by landslides. The highway serves as the primary road link to mainland India for the Kashmir valley. The chief minister of the federal territory has instructed officials to maintain constant monitoring of the situation, conduct evacuations in high-risk areas, and ensure the restoration of essential services.
In the preceding week, a cloudburst in the Kishtwar district of Jammu claimed the lives of at least 65 pilgrims who were trekking to a high-altitude Himalayan shrine. Additionally, a landslide at the popular Hindu pilgrimage shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi resulted in the deaths of another 30 people in the same region.

This could have been avoided if there had been proper monitoring and intervention during the monsoon.

Another disaster and another round of empty promises from the officials. Enough is enough!
