An online group known as Purgatory has taken responsibility for various recent hoax emergency calls targeting college campuses throughout the United States. These calls occurred at the start of the academic year and led to a substantial response from law enforcement.
The group has openly shared information about these hoaxes on a public channel of Telegram, a platform frequently utilized by criminal organizations. Cybersecurity specialists and law enforcement have linked Purgatory to multiple incidents, including fake shooting reports, as indicated by both the group's communications and independent investigations. Although Purgatory’s assertions have not been verified, federal authorities previously connected this network to a series of false bomb threats and shooting reports earlier in 2024, resulting in three individuals pleading guilty to related charges this year.

Scary stuff. This highlights how vulnerable campuses are to this kind of disruptive attack. Needs more security.

This is a direct threat to public safety. Law enforcement resources that should be used to fight real crime are tied up because of these jerks.

This is a sign of a more severe online issue. We need to investigate the source of this to tackle it in the first place.

We cannot allow these people to be treated like heroes for the fact that they're not.
