Norwegian Royal Family Member to Stand Trial on Multiple Charges

Marius Borg Høiby's court dates have been scheduled for early next year. He faces 32 charges, encompassing rape, abuse within a close relationship involving one former partner, acts of violence against another, death threats, and traffic violations. As the son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship, he is the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon and the elder half-brother of Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus.

The Crown Princess has maintained silence regarding her son's case, though his stepfather and representatives of the Norwegian royal house have addressed the matter. Defense lawyer Ellen Holager Andenæs confirmed that the trial will commence on February 3, 2026, and is anticipated to conclude on March 14, 2026.

Allegations suggest Høiby assaulted the women while they were asleep. He remains at liberty pending the trial. Oslo state attorney Sturla Henriksbo stated there is currently no basis for his arrest. The prosecution anticipates the trial could begin in mid-January and last approximately six weeks. Henriksbo emphasized the gravity of the case, highlighting the severe impact of rape and violence in close relationships. He also stated that Høiby's royal connection should not influence his treatment under the law. Investigators have reportedly gathered evidence including text messages, witness statements, and findings from police searches.

The Norwegian Royal Family issued a statement to a Norwegian media outlet, stating that the case is proceeding through the legal system according to standard procedures, with no further comment. However, Crown Prince Haakon made a personal statement in 2024, acknowledging the serious accusations against Marius and expressing confidence in the legal process. He also mentioned the family's efforts to ensure Marius receives necessary help, emphasizing their commitment to this priority within the legal framework.
