The number of individuals affected by the salmonella outbreak at a Spanish hotel has nearly doubled as authorities work to contain the situation. Health officials in Murcia report that the confirmed cases have risen from 100 to 190. Approximately 19 people remain hospitalized. This information comes from a report issued by the Epidemiology Service of the Regional Ministry of Health.
Nineteen individuals are still receiving treatment at the Santa Lucía hospital, although some were expected to be released due to their improved condition. The Regional Ministry of Health is actively investigating the source of the outbreak. Preliminary findings suggest cross-contamination as the cause of the widespread salmonellosis. Salmonella bacteria was detected in food consumed during a meal and in samples from staff who handled the food. Public health officials are considering opening a disciplinary procedure against the hotel.
The investigation continues with further analysis of food, raw materials, surfaces, and utensils. Staff samples are also being analyzed. The Hotel Izán Cavanna stated that they have not received any notification regarding a disciplinary procedure, nor has the origin or cause of the outbreak been officially confirmed. The hotel is actively collaborating with the authorities to clarify the situation. The Ministry of Health is continuing its investigation into the specific origin of the salmonella outbreak. The hotel's kitchens have been closed since Sunday.
The hotel's restaurant service continued to operate, including meals, until the Health Department ordered a precautionary suspension in the afternoon after dozens of people were affected. The Ministry stated that the decision was made as soon as foodborne transmission was suspected, which was confirmed by initial tests. The possibility of other causes, such as airborne transmission or the hotel pool, was ruled out. The hotel's management stated that they are actively managing a health incident affecting a limited number of guests with gastroenteritis. They are working closely with health authorities, assisting affected guests, activating hygiene and disinfection protocols, and engaging an external catering company to provide meals. The hotel expressed regret for the situation and is committed to resolving it and ensuring a safe environment.

What a disaster! Clearly, they didn't take food safety seriously. Customers deserve better.
