Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is significantly increasing security measures for the upcoming Conservative Party conference in Manchester this October. The force is preparing for the event, which will be held at the Manchester Central Convention Complex from October 5th to 8th.
A key element of the security plan involves Project Servator, a specialized policing tactic. Specially trained officers, skilled in identifying suspicious behavior, will be deployed both visibly and covertly throughout the city center and transport hubs. The aim of Project Servator is to disrupt various criminal activities, including terrorism.
The GMP has been planning for the conference for a year. In 2023, when the conference was last held in Manchester, Operation Protector managed a large protest. Chief Superintendent John-Paul Ruffle, overseeing the security operation, emphasized the priority of ensuring the safety of residents, visitors, and delegates. The public can expect to see an increased presence of uniformed, plain-clothes, and armed officers.
Project Servator officers are trained to recognize signs of individuals planning or preparing to commit crimes. Their presence is intended to provide reassurance while actively working to prevent criminal activity. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report anything unusual. Officers will be engaging with the public and local businesses.

I don't mind a bit of extra security. It's a small price to pay for keeping our city safe.

It's a necessary expense in today's world. Preventing terrorism and crimes is a vital concern.

They're preemptively punishing the public for crimes that haven't happened. This isn't justice. This is paranoia.

Feels like an invasion. Constant observation, everywhere you look. No thank you.

This makes me feel reassured. Knowing there are more police officers around certainly provides a sense of security.
