A snow leopard cub has been born at a UK zoo, marking a first in the zoo's 94-year history. The cub's name, Bheri, was chosen by visitors, reflecting her Himalayan origins. Images of the cub exploring her habitat have been released after the den cams showing her with her mother went viral.
The cub, born to Nubra and Yashin, spent her initial weeks in a secluded den. Now, she is venturing out to explore the zoo's Himalayan habitat. Her name, Bheri, is a tribute to the river in Nepal that flows through the Himalayas, honoring the snow leopard's natural environment.
Rachael Boatwright, Assistant Team Manager of carnivores at Chester Zoo, expressed excitement at seeing the cub explore her surroundings. She noted that Nubra is a caring mother. The zoo received many name suggestions, ultimately choosing Bheri to honor the cub's wild mountain roots and the zoo's work with the Snow Leopard Trust.
The cub's birth is part of a European endangered species breeding program, a conservation effort to protect the rare big cats. Chester Zoo also works with the Snow Leopard Trust and communities in Kyrgyzstan to reduce human-wildlife conflict, protect habitats, and support sustainable livelihoods.
With only an estimated 4,000 snow leopards remaining in the wild, the species faces threats from habitat loss, climate change, poaching, and human conflict. Known for their elusive nature and ability to thrive in harsh environments, they are often called the "ghosts of the mountains."
The zoo is a conservation and education charity dedicated to preventing extinction and raising awareness of environmental challenges. The zoo's site is home to over 500 threatened species. As a non-profit, the zoo invests in its conservation mission globally, working with over 3,000 species and running 140 international animal conservation breeding programs. It also houses five national plant collections.

The snow leopard cub is cute, but it doesn't justify the ethics of keeping her in captivity.

So happy for Nubra and Bheri! Great job to the zoo staff on their dedication!

Why don’t they focus on preserving habitats instead of breeding more animals in a zoo?

Bheri’s birth is not just a win for Chester Zoo but for snow leopards everywhere. Let's protect them!

We need more facilities like Chester Zoo that prioritize both animal welfare and conservation efforts! ❤️
