Ukraine Under Fire Amidst Rising Casualties and Calls for Peace

Overnight, Vladimir Putin's forces continued their attacks in Ukraine, disregarding international condemnation. Following the previous day's strikes in Kyiv, which resulted in 23 fatalities, the onslaught persisted in border areas as Russia sought to gain more territory. Between Thursday and Friday night, new attacks resulted in two deaths and nine injuries in Kherson. In Dnipro, two people, a man and a woman, were killed, and three were wounded in overnight Shahed drone strikes. In Zaporizhzhia, a one-year-old child and a 70-year-old man were injured. This region experienced a staggering 553 strikes across 13 settlements, as Putin aimed to break the resolve of Ukrainian residents.

Simultaneously, Ukrainian drones targeted Russian territory, specifically the city and region of Oryol, causing fires. This occurred as a new analysis indicated that the number of Russian soldiers killed during the war had surpassed 200,000. The analysis, conducted by Meduza and Mediazona, was based on inheritance data. The total number of casualties, including those wounded and permanently disabled, is believed to exceed one million. The recent strikes also brought to light the story of two-year-old Angelinka, the youngest victim of the attacks on Kyiv. The toddler died alongside her mother, Nadiya, 24. The head of the Kyiv City Military Administration announced that the death toll in Kyiv had risen to 23.

The Russian strikes resulted in the deaths of at least four children. The search for more victims continued in Kyiv as the city observed a day of mourning. A large-scale fire continued for a second day following the attack on the Turkish Baykar plant, where drones and their components are manufactured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the strikes demonstrated Russia's unchanged goals, which included targeting not only Ukrainians and their cities but also those worldwide who seek peace. He added that Russia was also striking against Europe and global actors. Zelensky noted that while there were reports of Putin's willingness to end the war, he chose violence over peace. He called for a clear global response to the situation. Donald Trump’s envoy to Ukraine warned of the attacks' threat to peace, while the British Prime Minister accused Putin of sabotaging peace efforts.

“The world shouldn’t blindly follow this narrative. Critical thinking is essential before jumping to conclusions about Russia.”

“Putin’s disregard for human life is appalling. We can’t stand by and watch this happen without consequence!”

“How convenient that the narrative changes whenever Russia is mentioned. It's more complex than this black-and-white view.”
