Escalation of Conflict in Gaza City as Israeli Military Declares Combat Zone

On August 29, 2025, an Israeli army tank was observed operating in the Gaza Strip, particularly near the southern Israel border, reflecting the intensifying conflict with Hamas. The Israeli military issued a statement declaring Gaza City as a "dangerous combat zone," signaling preparations to take over the largest city in the Palestinian territory after a prolonged two-year war.

Currently, the UN estimates that close to a million individuals reside in the Gaza governorate, which encompasses Gaza City and nearby areas in the north. Beginning from August 29, the military indicated that their local tactical pause aimed at allowing for humanitarian aid would not extend to Gaza City, emphasizing its status as a high-risk area. While the military has not ordered an immediate evacuation of residents, the spokesperson for the army indicated that evacuation from the city is "inevitable."

Reports indicate a significant movement of Palestinians fleeing southward, with photos showing vehicles overloaded with personal belongings such as mattresses and chairs. In a stern warning, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Gaza City would face destruction if Hamas did not agree to a resolution favorable to Israel. To support these military actions, the ministry has mobilized around 60,000 reservists to assist in the planned operations.

The military reiterated its commitment to humanitarian efforts while continuing offensive operations against Hamas. Meanwhile, on the ground, Gaza's civil defense agency has reported multiple casualties inflicted by Israeli fire, with recent claims citing 33 fatalities within a single day, although the Israeli military is still verifying these reports. Due to media restrictions and access challenges in Gaza, independent verification of casualty figures remains difficult. Since the outbreak of war following the October 2023 Hamas attacks, approximately 1,219 lives have been lost in Israel, predominantly civilians, while retaliatory measures by Israel have led to the deaths of over 62,966 Palestinians, the majority being non-combatants, according to health ministry data in Gaza, which the UN views as credible.

The Israeli military is right to take necessary precautions to secure their borders from Hamas.

Declaring civilians as collateral damage is inhumane and unacceptable.

The international community needs to step in and condemn these actions instead of remaining silent.
