On Friday, Missouri's Governor Mike Kehoe announced a special session of the state legislature focused on redrawing congressional districts to benefit the Republican Party. This move positions Missouri as the first Republican-controlled state to take such action, aligning with efforts from the Trump administration to maintain Republican dominance in the upcoming midterm elections.
In addition to redistricting, Kehoe is advocating for changes to make it more challenging for residents to pass citizen-initiated measures. This push comes in response to recent voter-approved initiatives that have garnered opposition from many conservative lawmakers, including a significant amendment that secures abortion rights in the state constitution.
Kehoe expressed his motivation for these actions, stating, “I’m calling for a special session on congressional redistricting and initiative petition reform to ensure our districts and Constitution truly reflect Missouri values.” He indicated that the goal is to provide voters with clarity and a sense of ownership regarding their political future.
The plan includes altering the Fifth Congressional District, located in Kansas City, which is currently represented by Democrat Emanuel Cleaver. This proposal aims to create an additional Republican seat, despite facing resistance from Democratic lawmakers in the state legislature.

The people spoke with their votes, and now they’re trying to change the rules because they don’t like the outcome.

Why do the Republicans fear giving the people a voice? It’s pathetic to see this desperation.
