On Wednesday, eight-year-old Fletcher Merkel arrived at school with a head full of dreams. His mother, Mollie, had given him $20 that day, a treat for him and his siblings to enjoy at Starbucks after school. He was eager to order his own drink for the first time.
Fletcher was anticipating finishing the first Harry Potter book and beginning the second, his parents shared on Friday. He had aspirations of mastering beef Wellington and was thrilled about his father coaching him in flag football. He envisioned building Lego creations and making more grilled cheese sandwiches. He also looked forward to discovering more frogs, bunnies, worms, and turtles to bring home and examine.
Tragically, all of these plans were abruptly halted that morning. An attacker, armed with multiple firearms, opened fire on the school while Fletcher and other children were attending Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. This devastating event occurred just days after he had started third grade.
Fletcher, along with ten-year-old Harper Moyski, lost their lives. At least fifteen children, ranging in age from six to fifteen, and three adults in their eighties were injured. The profound impact of this tragedy is only beginning to be understood by the families, friends, the school community, and the city as a whole.

We're reminded of the innocence lost in such acts of violence. My thoughts are with Fletcher's family.

We need to ensure that such tragedies do not happen again. We owe it to every child.

Let’s honor the memory of Fletcher and Harper by pushing for action in their names.

It’s unfortunate, but sensationalism is leading us away from meaningful dialogue.

Fletcher’s dreams and aspirations should inspire us to fight for a better future for our children.
