On Friday, the Transportation Department declared that it would be terminating or withdrawing a total of $679 million in federal funding designated for twelve projects across the nation that were aimed at developing offshore wind energy. This decision marks a continuation of the Trump administration's increasing opposition to wind energy projects, which have garnered support from the Biden administration in the past.
Among the projects affected is a notable allocation of $427 million, intended for the upgrade of a marine terminal located in Humboldt County, California. This upgrade was key to facilitating the assembly and launching of floating wind turbines, an initiative linked to California's ambitious renewable energy targets. Additionally, the funding cuts include $48 million earmarked for an offshore wind port in Staten Island, $39 million to enhance a port near Norfolk, Virginia, and $20 million aimed at upgrading a marine terminal in Paulsboro, New Jersey. These projects were primarily meant to serve as staging areas for erecting large wind turbines that would ultimately be installed at sea.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the investments in wind projects as "wasteful," arguing that the allocated resources could be better utilized for revitalizing America's maritime sector. He also indicated that where it is feasible, the financial resources would be redirected to improve other ports instead.

More money for ports, less for useless wind turbines. A sound decision and a better use of funds.

This is terrible news for Humboldt County! That upgrade was essential for clean energy.

This is a HUGE step backward! Cutting funding for renewable energy is shortsighted. We need to invest in our future.

The Biden administration was pushing these projects for clicks, not for the American people.

The left is obsessed with these unreliable energy options.

Offshore wind is a game-changer! This decision hurts our chances of tackling climate change.

They're sacrificing environmental progress for oil and gas interests. It's disgusting.
