The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to launch significant immigration enforcement operations in Chicago next week. Sources indicate that the tactics employed will mirror those used in Los Angeles, which previously sparked widespread protests.
Two senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security have confirmed the administration's plans to expand immigration arrest operations. These operations could begin as early as September 5th, according to sources familiar with the matter. The enforcement actions in Los Angeles involved the use of armored vehicles, tactical gear, and weaponry. Similar tactics are anticipated to be deployed in Chicago.
In June, the National Guard was deployed to Los Angeles amid protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions. At that time, Chicago officials were informed that the president intended to send ICE tactical units to the city as well. However, those units never arrived. It remains unclear whether the upcoming operation is related to the previously planned, but unrealized, enforcement effort.
Sources have stated that these plans are separate from President Trump's recent efforts to deploy the National Guard to Chicago to address city crime. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have strongly opposed these plans. Governor Pritzker has warned the President against such actions.
The Department of Homeland Security has reportedly been in discussions with administrators at Naval Station Great Lakes regarding infrastructure and logistical support for ICE staff involved in immigration efforts in the Chicago area. It is uncertain if these discussions are a result of the planned escalation of immigration enforcement.
Governor Pritzker has stated that neither he nor his administration has been contacted by the Trump administration. He characterized the administration's actions as an attempt to "invade the city of Chicago, not coordinate with law enforcement." Mayor Johnson has also stated that he and his office have not received any direct communication from the federal government regarding the operation.
The Department of Homeland Security released a statement emphasizing the administration's commitment to public safety. The statement highlighted the arrest and removal of individuals deemed to be the "worst of the worst," including gang members, murderers, pedophiles, and rapists.

We have to organize and protest. We cannot let this happen.

Where's the coordination? This is a heavy-handed approach that will terrify families.

This is just plain wrong. Targeting a whole community like this is unacceptable.

This is what strong leadership looks like. We need these enforcements.
