The families of the two children who tragically lost their lives in the shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis shared their statements on Thursday afternoon. The father of one of the victims, 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel, spoke on behalf of his family. The other victim was identified as 10-year-old Harper Moyski, whose family also released a statement. Both families requested privacy during this difficult time.
Jesse Merkel, Fletcher's father, delivered a heartfelt statement. He expressed the profound grief of losing his son, emphasizing the void that would forever remain. He described Fletcher's love for family, friends, and various activities. He expressed hope for healing for his family and the other victim's family, as well as for the recovery of the wounded and the mental well-being of those affected, especially the children. He acknowledged the heroic actions of those present during the shooting and expressed gratitude. He asked for empathy rather than sympathy and urged people to remember Fletcher for who he was.
The statement from Michael Moyski and Jackie Flavin, Harper's parents, conveyed their devastation. They described Harper as a bright, joyful, and deeply loved child. They expressed their heartbreak, not only as parents but also for Harper's sister. They also grieved for the Annunciation community and expressed gratitude for the staff and first responders. They emphasized the importance of action to address gun violence and the mental health crisis, hoping Harper's memory would inspire change. They expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and requested privacy as they mourned and honored Harper's life.
In addition to the two fatalities, 18 other individuals were injured in the shooting. Among the injured were 15 students from Annunciation, aged between 6 and 15, and three adults in their 80s. While all the children are expected to survive, at least seven victims were initially in critical condition.
The shooting prompted responses from various leaders and organizations. President Trump and Governor Tim Walz ordered flags to be flown at half-mast. Vigils and moments of silence were held to honor the victims, and efforts are underway to provide support to those affected by the tragedy.

I hope that in honoring Harper and Fletcher, we can find ways to prevent these tragedies in the future.

We must take a stand against gun violence while also supporting those who have been impacted—there are practical paths forward!

While I sympathize with the families, this kind of violence is becoming too common because we refuse to confront the real issues.

Tragic as it is, this shooting just highlights the need for more robust gun control measures that seem to be ignored over and over.
