The Ministry of Justice announced on Wednesday its budget requests for the fiscal year 2026, which begins in April of the following year. The primary focus of these requests will be on initiatives concerning foreign nationals residing within the country.
The ministry is seeking a total funding of ¥877.5 billion. This represents an 8.9% increase compared to the budget allocated for fiscal year 2025.
A significant portion of the requested funds, ¥22.9 billion, is earmarked for measures specifically related to foreign workers. This represents a substantial increase, more than doubling the previous allocation. The ministry intends to intensify efforts to combat illegal overstaying, including the expedited execution of deportation orders.
Furthermore, the budget requests include ¥18.3 billion for initiatives designed to address the growing number of foreign tourists. The ministry plans to conduct research on a proposed online travel authorization system for visitors from visa-exempt countries, although the specific amount allocated for this research was not detailed.

All this money just to track tourists? Seems like a waste of resources.

This budget reflects a fear-based approach to immigration, not a rational plan.

Feels like a government overreach – targeting specific groups of people. Unnecessary.
