On Thursday, President Trump put forth the idea for an unconventional national convention to be organized by the Republican Party just ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. He communicated this suggestion through his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before,” and urged people to stay tuned for further updates.
Traditionally, both major political parties in the United States convene every four years primarily to nominate their presidential candidates. However, Trump’s team aims to motivate a voter base that typically only turns out when he is on the ballot, especially since the upcoming elections will be crucial for determining control of the House and Senate during the latter part of his second term.
Just a day prior, Axios reported that the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Ken Martin, was also exploring the idea of holding a convention for Democrats in 2026. This notion was a topic of discussion at the recent D.N.C. meeting in Minneapolis, although it faced skepticism due to potential high costs for an organization that is already managing financial constraints.

This could motivate those who usually sit on the sidelines. I’m excited to see the turnout!

Holding a convention just to boost turnout seems desperate. Is the GOP really that lost?

Innovative thinking is what the Republican Party needs! I fully support this convention idea.
