Federal prosecutors amended the charges against a man who threw a sandwich at a federal officer in Washington, D.C. Initially facing more serious charges, the case was refiled as a misdemeanor after the prosecution failed to secure a felony indictment this week.
This decision represents another setback for the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington. The office has faced challenges in successfully prosecuting cases stemming from the deployment of National Guard troops and federal agents to address crime in the city during the Trump administration.
The case of Sean C. Dunn, a 37-year-old former Justice Department paralegal, gained significant attention in Washington. A video of the incident, showing him throwing a submarine sandwich at a Customs and Border Protection officer, went viral. The video depicted Dunn standing close to the officer, calling him and his fellow agents "fascists" and expressing his disapproval of their presence in the city.
The Trump administration also drew attention to the case by releasing a video of a large group of heavily armed law enforcement officers arresting Dunn at his apartment.

I can’t believe a video of someone throwing a sandwich is making headlines when we have actual serious crimes happening.

I appreciate seeing some common sense in the legal system. Let’s keep things in perspective!

This incident brought attention to serious issues regarding law enforcement presence, even if it seemed silly!

This feels like a complete disregard for the safety of our officers. A slap on the wrist isn't enough.

This is a perfect example of prioritizing the actual cases that matter instead of wasting time.
