Russia Condemns US Withdrawal from Iran Nuclear Agreement Amid UN Sanctions Debate

On Thursday, Russia took a firm stance against President Donald Trump’s choice to pull the U.S. out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, insisting that Washington is responsible for Iran's failure to comply with the international agreement. This statement followed an announcement by the U.K., France, and Germany (E3) to the UN Security Council regarding their initiation of a snapback mechanism aimed at reinstating stringent UN sanctions on Iran, citing its non-compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s UN Ambassador, emphasized that the deterioration of the situation began when the United States abandoned the JCPOA. He pointed out that the U.S. decision in 2018 to withdraw was the root cause of the issues, despite Trump’s claims that Iran was violating the agreement. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other parties involved indicated that there was no substantial evidence of Iran advancing its nuclear program until 2019, a position the IAEA maintains.

Additionally, Polyanskiy remarked that Iran's advancements in uranium enrichment were directly linked to the U.S. exit from the JCPOA and noted that these measures could be reversed. In an effort to extend the timeline of the nuclear agreement by six months, Russia and China presented a draft resolution to the UN Security Council. However, the likelihood of gaining support from the U.S., France, or the U.K., all permanent members, appears slim, particularly given Iran's previous rejection of a similar extension proposed by E3 negotiators.

The U.S. has consistently urged the other JCPOA signatories to impose snapback sanctions on Iran, which it can no longer do since exiting the agreement. Despite evidence of Iran's violations, including excessive uranium enrichment and obstruction of IAEA inspections, a Russian representative claimed that the E3's actions would have no legal or procedural consequences and described their approach as escalatory.

A UK official affirmed that diplomatic efforts with Iran have been ongoing for years, including a 2022 agreement that Iran subsequently rejected. While there has been considerable diplomatic activity in recent months, Russia appeared to underappreciate these efforts. Polyanskiy warned that the global community stands at a critical juncture, contrasting paths of peace and diplomacy against methods of coercion and threats. The White House has yet to comment on this matter.

It’s rich for Russia to talk about coercion and threats while they’re busy influencing other nations.

The mere fact that Russia is backing Iran should raise red flags. They're not interested in peace; they want chaos.

The U.S. pulling out of the deal was a significant mistake that the world is suffering from now.

It's ironic that Russia blames the U.S. for Iran’s violations when they’ve been complicit in many violations themselves.

It's refreshing to see Russia defending diplomatic avenues rather than promoting escalation.
