A fatal traffic accident in Florida, which resulted in three deaths, has prompted Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to issue a warning regarding state regulations for commercial driver's licenses. The incident involved a tractor-trailer driven by Harjinder Singh, an undocumented immigrant from India, who allegedly caused the crash while making an illegal U-turn on a Florida turnpike.
Singh's commercial driver's license was issued in California, with previous licenses held in Washington state. Secretary Duffy also noted a traffic stop in New Mexico where Singh's vehicle was not taken out of service. In response to these events, Duffy has given the states in question a 30-day deadline to comply with federal regulations, threatening the loss of federal funding through the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program if they fail to do so.
Following the Florida crash, federal investigators revealed that Singh had failed English proficiency and road sign tests. The California Governor's office, however, maintains that they adhered to federal law when issuing Singh's license and placed blame on the previous administration.
New Mexico's Governor's office has expressed confidence that the state is in compliance with the law. They emphasized their commitment to safety and stated that their commercial driver's license regulations fully align with federal standards, including an English test requirement. The Washington Department of Licensing has initiated an investigation into how Singh obtained a commercial driver’s license in the state.
Secretary Duffy emphasized the importance of road safety, highlighting the need for drivers of large vehicles to understand road signs and receive adequate training. He stressed the significance of these regulations for the safety of everyone who uses the roadways.

California's blaming game! They issued the license, they bear some responsibility. Shouldn't blame the previous administration for all wrongs.

It's good that they're threatening the loss of federal funding. This needs to be dealt with swiftly.

The focus should be on the traffic violations, not the driver's immigration status. This is just playing on prejudice.
