Netflix Gains Japanese Media Rights for World Baseball Classic 2026

Netflix has acquired the Japanese media rights to the upcoming World Baseball Classic, which is scheduled for next year. This marks a significant moment for the platform, as it will be streaming its first live event in Japan. The tournament will encompass a total of 47 games, highlighting Team Japan, which is returning as the defending champion after their victory in 2023, where Shohei Ohtani secured the last out against Mike Trout of the United States.

The 2026 edition of the World Baseball Classic will be its sixth occurrence and will showcase 20 teams divided into four initial pools located in Tokyo, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Houston, and Miami. The tournament is set to commence on March 5 and will conclude with the finals on March 17 in Miami. In addition to securing the WBC rights, Netflix is also a potential contender to broadcast the Home Run Derby in the United States, as Major League Baseball is exploring a three-year deal for the event starting next year.
