Kansai Electric Increases Funding for Nuclear Host Communities in Fukui

On August 25, Hitoshi Mizuta, the head of Kansai Electric's nuclear power division, met with Vice Governor Yasuhiro Nakamura in Fukui to share details about an ambitious funding initiative aimed at bolstering regional development in areas hosting the utility's nuclear power plants. Kansai Electric Power Co. plans to substantially raise its annual contributions to 5 billion yen, equivalent to about $33.8 million, reinforcing its commitment to foster local support in a prefecture that houses the largest number of nuclear reactors in Japan.

The increased funding initiative, set to kick off in fiscal 2025 with contributions of 5.78 billion yen adjusted for reactor performance and fuel costs, marks a significant shift from previous years when contributions ranged from 100 million to 200 million yen from fiscal 2021 to 2023. Notably, the company intends to provide a one-time contribution of 15 billion yen, ensuring that not only the towns that host the power plants—Mihama, Oi, and Takahama—but all municipalities in the region can apply for grants.

While the financial support aims to enhance healthcare, transportation, and infrastructure projects throughout Fukui Prefecture, specific details regarding how the funds will be allocated remain undisclosed to the public. This funding initiative follows the approval by Fukui Governor Tatsuji Sugimoto of Kansai Electric's plan to transfer spent nuclear fuel out of the prefecture, which was seen as crucial for the continued operation of the plants. In light of maintaining community support, Kansai Electric is also preparing to conduct site surveys for a potential new reactor at its Mihama facility.

$33.8 million is a drop in the bucket for the risks nuclear power poses. Where's the real investment in safety and decommissioning?

Who benefits? Certainly not the local residents who face the ongoing risk of radiation exposure.
